Kent Arts Commission invites you to the dedication of
Daily Migration public artwork by Cheryl dos Remédios
Monday, July 18th, 2005 Horseshoe Pump Station 7943 S 261st Street, Kent
Event Information: View the two-part series of sculpture by riding the Sounder commuter train from King Street or Tukwila station. To view the sculptures as a panned animation, sit by the west window when traveling south. Before reaching the Kent Train Station, stare straight out of the window. The series of 5 birds will appear as 1 bird jumping. After the train leaves Kent Station, stare straight out of the window again. The second series of 5 birds will appear to be 1 bird flying.
RSVP to artscommission@ci.kent.wa.us for free Sounder tickets and van transportation. (Please note: The train only travels south in the evenings, so you must RSVP for transportation back to your departure point.) You may also drive directly to the site to view the sculpture and attend the dedication. Everyone is welcome - please invite friends and family. Project Description: Unlike a typical flash animation, this panned animation has an ephemeral quality. The perception of the sequence depends upon the quality of light, the viewing angle and the distance. In the morning, as commuters travel to work, the sculptures can appear from the far tracks as a flock of birds. In the evenings, as commuters travel home on the closest rail, they can see a single bird jump and fly. The changing appearance of Daily Migration reflects the process of commuting: we travel to become part of a working group, and then we return home to our individual lives. When first selected to interview for this project, I rode the train. Using video, I documented that due to the speed and viewing angle, a 10 foot wide sculpture could be seen for only .0433 seconds. I decided to use this constraint as a creative element, and this is why my design is based upon my experiments with panned animation. Event Information: I have set up studio work space in Burien to complete a series of large-scale sculptures commissioned by the City of Kent. I am using this work space in cooperation with the City of Burien and Discover Burien.
My work is featured on the poster and publicity for the 2005 Burien Spring Art Stroll which takes place on Saturday, May 7th. Please come to the Spring Stroll to view the original painting created for the poster and to view the fabrication of the sculptures.
Project Information To develop the design, I have used paper-cuts, digital photography and animation software. Currently, I am sculpting cement over a steel armature, some of which will remain exposed steel. On Saturday, I will be working with the stucco system. When completed, the sculptures will be installed along the Kent Train Corridor. The dedication will take place this summer, 2005.
The Kent Train Corridor project provides me with a rare opportunity to create a connecting vision along a stretch of municipal landscape. The artwork will serve as gateway elements on the north and south borders of Kent for vehicular traffic, and especially for those commuting by train. Five sculptures will be sited at both the northern and southern city limits. The sculptures range from 12 to 18 feet wide and will be mounted 20 to 30 feet above the ground. The imagery references Kent’s history and Sister Cities. In addition to my family and friends, I would like to thank the following people for their help with this project: Brenda Abney, City of Kent; Garin Lee, City of Kent; Kent Arts Commission; Debra George, Discover Burien; Burien Arts Commission; Charles Wiemeyer, CWDC Metal Fabrication; Doug Loesch, Magnusson Klemencic Associates; Tina Hoggatt, Kent Train Corridor Art Planner; Jerry Starke, Star Fiberglass; Roger Waterhouse, Artech; Daniel Prieto, Salmon Bay Sand and Gravel; Juan Elizondo, Venetian Artisan Group; Kiyo Marsh, Imago Imaging; Ken Wagner, Ken Wagner Photography; Brad Cerenzia, web design; Willard Park, Rainier Industries; Bruce Dickinson, Rainier Industries; Karen Fischer, TubeArt; Tim Wood, video consultant; Sean Nadeau, Puget Sound Pipe; Andy Schmidt, Atlas Supply; staff and co-members, 4 Culture Public Art Committee; and especially Ed & Marlies dos Remedios; Mark dos Remedios; Jen Pageler; Cynthia Gould Brown; Gary Looney; Wade Wheeler; Charles & Lucille Bertholf; Vickie Ropp; Geneva Wheeler; Ricky and Angelina.
